The Northern Territory Library is a very important library in the Northern Territory of Australia. It collects, keeps safe, and shares books, photos, and other important information about the Territory. Think of it as a giant memory bank for the whole region!
The library is located inside Parliament House in Darwin City. This is where the local government makes decisions. The library has over 108,000 books and many other items.
Since 2020, the Northern Territory Library has joined with the NT Archives Service. They now work together as Library & Archives NT. This means they look after even more historical records.

History of the Library
The Northern Territory Library first opened in 1980. It was called the 'State Reference Library' back then. Its first home was on Cavenagh Street in central Darwin.
In 1985, the library's management changed. It moved from the Department of Community Development to the Department of Education. This meant it started helping the Office of Local Government with library services.
Moving to Parliament House
In 1995, the library moved to its current home. This new location was the brand new Parliament House. The Hon Stephen Hatton MLA, who was the minister in charge of libraries, officially opened it on May 22.
After this move, the library's name changed to 'Reference and Parliamentary Library Services'. Then, in 1997, it was renamed again to 'Northern Territory Library'.
On September 12, 2016, the library became part of the Northern Territory Government's Department of Tourism and Culture.
What the Library Offers
The Northern Territory Library has a special collection of materials. These include books, magazines, newspapers, and audio-visual items. All of these are about the Northern Territory.
The library also hosts regular events and exhibitions. These can be fun and educational for everyone.
Supporting Other Libraries
The Northern Territory Library helps 32 other public and remote libraries. These libraries are spread across the Northern Territory. It even helps some communities get internet access.
National edeposit System
The library is part of a group called National and State Libraries Australia. This group worked together to create a system called National edeposit (NED). This system lets publishers from all over Australia upload electronic books and other publications. This helps keep important digital information safe. It also makes these publications available online for people to read.
Territory Stories Digital Archive
Territory Stories is a special online collection. It holds historical and culturally important materials from the Northern Territory. This digital archive includes documents, photographs, and audio and video files.
People from the community can also add their own content to Territory Stories. This means you can find stories collected from local knowledge centres. These often include stories from Indigenous communities. Territory Stories is a great way to explore the history and culture of the Territory through the eyes of its people.
