The northern riffle darner (scientific name: Notoaeschna geminata) is a type of dragonfly. It belongs to a family of dragonflies called Telephlebiidae.
This special dragonfly lives only in eastern Australia. You can find it north of the Hunter River in New South Wales. It loves to live near fast-flowing streams, which are sometimes called "riffles."
About the Northern Riffle Darner
The northern riffle darner is a fairly large dragonfly. It has a dark brown or black body with bright yellow markings. These colors help it blend in with its surroundings.
What Does It Look Like?
This dragonfly looks quite similar to another type of dragonfly called the southern riffle darner (Notoaeschna sagittata). The main difference is where they live. The southern riffle darner lives south of the Hunter River, while our northern friend lives to the north!
