The northern schiffornis (Schiffornis veraepacis) is a cool bird from Central and South America. It is a type of Neotropical bird, meaning it lives in the warmer parts of the Americas.
Where the Northern Schiffornis Lives
This bird lives in warm, wet places. You can find it from southern Mexico all the way down to western Colombia and Venezuela.
It likes to call moist forests its home. These can be lowland forests or even mountain forests in tropical and subtropical areas.
What the Northern Schiffornis Looks Like
The northern schiffornis is a medium-sized bird. It is about 24 centimeters (9 inches) long. That's about the length of a ruler!
Its Bird Family Connections
For a long time, scientists thought the northern schiffornis belonged to the manakin bird family. Manakins are known for their bright colors and cool dances.
However, new studies showed that the northern schiffornis is actually part of a different family called Tityridae. This family includes birds like tityras and becards. The South American Classification Committee (SACC) now agrees with this change.
In 2013, experts decided to split the northern schiffornis into its own species. Before this, it was part of a larger group of birds called the "thrush-like schiffornis complex." This means several similar birds were once thought to be one species. Now, they are recognized as separate species.
