Location in Oxford city centre

The Northgate Hall stands in St Michael's Street, Oxford, England. It has had a number of purposes:

  • It was originally built as a Primitive Methodist Church, but with Methodist Union in 1932 it was no longer needed for this purpose, as the Wesleyan Wesley Memorial Church is about 100m away;
  • From 1933 until the summer of 1989, it served as the base for the Oxford Inter-Collegiate Christian Union (OICCU);
  • From 1991 to 2005, it hosted the Oxford Lesbian and Gay Community Centre.

Since the early 1990s, it has also hosted Gatehouse, which is a drop-in centre for homeless people set up by churches in the centre of Oxford.

In 2001, it suffered damage from a fire.

In January 2011, the City Council issued a statement that they were giving Gatehouse notice to move out of the building, meaning that the charity will close unless other premises are found. They cited financial pressures and the fact that the building is underoccupied as users of other parts of the building have left.
