Northmoor Lock is a special kind of gate system on the River Thames in Oxfordshire, England. It helps boats move up and down the river where the water level changes. This lock is located on the northern side of the river, about one mile from the village of Northmoor.

This lock was built in 1896 by the Thames Conservancy. It replaced older, simpler locks called "flash locks." These old locks were at Hart's Weir, which was upstream, and Ark Weir, which was downstream.

Northmoor Lock, its house, and the nearby weir still look much like they did when they were first built. You can see them clearly from the Thames Path or from the river itself.

The weir next to the lock is very unique. It is one of only two remaining "Paddle and rymer" weirs that are still operated by hand. Experts believe there are no other weirs like these left anywhere else in the world!

How to Visit Northmoor Lock

Northmoor Lock is not right next to the village of Northmoor. It's a bit of a walk across the countryside to get there.

You can reach the lock by following the Thames Path. This walking trail runs along the river. You can start your walk from places like Bablock Hythe or Newbridge.

The River Stretch Above the Lock

The part of the river just above Northmoor Lock is called a "reach." Along this reach, you'll find the Hart's Weir Footbridge. This bridge is built where the old Hart's Weir used to be.

Further along the river, you will see the ancient Newbridge. This bridge was built way back in the 13th century! It crosses the river where the River Windrush flows into the Thames.

The Thames Path continues along the northern bank of the river all the way to Newbridge. At Newbridge, the path crosses over to the south bank. It then follows the river to a place called Shifford.

At Shifford, the path crosses the river again. It goes over an old part of the river's course to reach Shifford Lock. After that, it crosses the lock area and heads towards Chimney Meadows.
