The Northwood Congregational Church is a historic church building in Northwood, New Hampshire. It is located on US 4. This church was built in 1840 and is a great example of Greek Revival style. It looks like an ancient Greek temple! It is considered one of the best and most original Greek Revival churches in New Hampshire. Because of its importance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The church community is part of the United Church of Christ.

What Does the Church Look Like?

The Northwood Congregational Church is in the center of Northwood town. It's on the south side of US Route 4, just east of the Coe-Brown Northwood Academy.

Its Unique Style

The church is a single-story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a gabled roof. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards, known as clapboards. The front of the church is designed to look like a classical Greek temple. It has four tall, round columns with grooves, called fluted columns. These columns hold up a large triangular section above the entrance, which is called a pediment. The flat area inside the pediment is smooth.

The Entrance and Tower

The main entrance has two doorways. Each doorway has flat, decorative columns, called pilasters, behind the main round columns. On top of the church is a three-part tower. This tower holds a bell that was added in 1888.

The Church's History

The Northwood Congregational Church was built in 1840. It was likely built by a local builder named Jonathan Tasker. For many years, this church was a very important part of the Northwood community.

Important People and Education

One of the early pastors, Reverend Elliott Cogswell, played a big role in starting the Northwood Academy. Today, this school is known as Coe-Brown Northwood Academy. The church helped shape the community for a long time.

Services and Revival

After World War II, fewer people attended church services, so they stopped for a while. However, in the 2000s, church services started up again. The church continues to be a special place in Northwood.
