The Norumbega Carriage House is a special old building in Camden, Maine. It was built in 1886. A carriage house was a place where people kept horse-drawn carriages and horses. This one belonged to the big house next door, called Norumbega Castle.

The famous architect Arthur B. Jennings designed both the carriage house and the main castle. They are great examples of Queen Anne architecture in Camden. This style of building was popular in the late 1800s. The Norumbega Carriage House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it is an important historical site.

What is the Norumbega Carriage House Like?

The Norumbega Carriage House is a two-and-a-half story building. It is made from strong fieldstone and wood shingles. It has a rectangular shape with a cross-gabled roof. This means the roof has different sections that meet at angles.

Unique Features of the Building

One cool part of the carriage house is its tall, round tower. This tower is at the eastern corner of the building. The bottom of the tower is stone, and the top is wood. It has a pointy, cone-shaped roof.

The front of the building faces northwest. It has a stone section that goes up to a dormer window in the roof. A large, arched opening on the ground floor was once the main entrance for carriages. Above it, there is another arched window. A square section extends from the main building, making it look like an "L" shape.

The History of the Norumbega Carriage House

The carriage house was built in 1886. It was part of the estate of Joseph Barker Stearns. Mr. Stearns was a very rich man. He made his money in telecommunications. This means he worked with sending messages over long distances. He invented a special way to send two messages at once using a telegraph. This invention was called the duplex telegraph.

Who Designed This Building?

The architect, Arthur B. Jennings, was from New York City. He designed many important buildings. In Maine, he also designed the St. Lawrence Church in Portland.

For many years, the Norumbega Carriage House has been owned separately from the main Norumbega Castle. It has been changed over time to become a private home. It is no longer used for carriages!
