Did you know there are two different versions of Wikipedia for the Norwegian language? That's right! One is for articles written in Bokmål or Riksmål, and the other is for articles written in Nynorsk. Both are huge online encyclopedias, just like the Wikipedia you might use every day.
What is Norwegian Wikipedia?
Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. The Norwegian versions are special because they focus on articles written in Norwegian. This helps people in Norway and those who speak Norwegian find information easily in their own language.
Two Kinds of Norwegian
Norway has two main written forms of its language: Bokmål and Nynorsk.
- The Bokmål and Riksmål Wikipedia started first, in November 2001.
- The Nynorsk Wikipedia began a few years later, in July 2004.
Having two Wikipedias means that articles can be written in the specific language form that readers prefer.
How Big Are They?
These Norwegian Wikipedias are very popular! They have grown a lot since they started.
- The Bokmål and Riksmål edition is one of the largest Wikipedias in the world. It ranks as the 20th biggest by the number of articles.
- The Nynorsk edition is also quite large, ranking as the 46th biggest.
As of July 2014, the Bokmål and Riksmål Wikipedia had over 426,000 articles. The Nynorsk Wikipedia had over 115,000 articles. This shows how much information is available in Norwegian for everyone to learn from!
