History

How Norwich Began

The story of Norwich started in 1825. That's when the very first permanent home was built there. For many years, it was a quiet area.

Growing into an Industrial Village

By the 1880s, Norwich began to change. It grew into a busy industrial village. This meant many factories and foundries were built. Places like the Norwich Twine Mill and the Harris Hardwood Company opened. These businesses helped the area grow and provided jobs.

Becoming Part of Roanoke

In 1919, Norwich officially became part of the city of Roanoke. After the 1960s, Norwich mostly became a place where people live. Some industrial areas still remain around the edges. Most of the homes you see in Norwich today were built around 1900.

Community Efforts in Norwich

To help the neighborhood, the Norwich Neighborhood Alliance was formed in 1996. This group works to support the people living in Norwich. They speak up for the community's needs and help make it a better place.
