Norwood House is a special old home located near Lewes, Delaware. It was built around 1850. This house is important because it tells us about a unique community from the 1800s called Belltown.

What is Norwood House?

Norwood House is a two-story house made of wood. It sits on a strong brick foundation. The outside walls are covered with weatherboard, which are long, thin pieces of wood. The roof is sloped and covered with shingles.

The house has a main rectangular part. There's also a single-story section that goes along the back. Another older, smaller section is on the north side of the back. On the property, you can also find an old privy, which is like an outdoor toilet.

A Glimpse into History: Belltown

Norwood House is very special because it's one of the few buildings left from Belltown. Belltown was a community in the 19th century where "free colored" people lived. This means it was a place where African Americans who were not enslaved could build their lives.

The house has stayed almost exactly as it was built. This makes it a valuable link to the past. It helps us understand what life was like for people in Belltown during that time. It shows how these communities were built and how they survived.

Protecting History: National Register

Because of its importance, Norwood House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The National Register is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. When a place is on this list, it means it's recognized for its historical value. This helps protect it for future generations to learn from and enjoy.
