Epistaxis facts for kids

A nosebleed happens when blood comes out of your nose. The medical word for a nosebleed is epistaxis. Even though nosebleeds can look a bit scary, they are usually not serious. Most nosebleeds start in the front part of your nose. These are called anterior nosebleeds.
Sometimes, nosebleeds can happen deeper inside your nose. These are called posterior nosebleeds. Posterior nosebleeds are more serious. If someone has one, they might need to go to the hospital. Nosebleeds happen more often in winter. This is because of more colds and big changes in temperature and humidity.
What Causes Nosebleeds?
Most nosebleeds happen for simple reasons. Here are some common causes:
- A hit to the nose: This can happen during sports or if you accidentally bump your nose.
- Nose-picking: Picking your nose can damage the tiny blood vessels inside.
- Dry air: When the air is very dry, the inside of your nose can dry out and crack.
- Allergies or colds: Blowing your nose too hard or having a stuffy nose can irritate it.
- Certain medicines: Some medicines can make your blood thinner, which makes nosebleeds more likely.
How to Stop a Nosebleed Safely
Many people tilt their heads back during a nosebleed. But this is not safe! Tilting your head back can make blood go down your throat. This could make you choke or feel sick.
Here is the best way to deal with a nosebleed:
- Sit down and lean forward: This helps the blood drain out of your nose instead of down your throat.
- Pinch your nose: Use your thumb and index finger to firmly pinch the soft part of your nose, just below the bony bridge.
- Breathe through your mouth: Keep pinching for at least 10 minutes without letting go.
- Use a cold compress: You can put a cold cloth or ice pack on the bridge of your nose. This can help narrow the blood vessels.
- Stay calm: Most nosebleeds stop on their own. Try to relax.
If the bleeding does not stop after 20 minutes, or if the nosebleed is very heavy, it's a good idea to tell an adult or see a doctor.
