The Nososticta taracumbi, also known as the Melville Island threadtail, is a type of damselfly. Damselflies are amazing insects that look a lot like dragonflies, but they usually hold their wings together over their back when they are resting. This special damselfly belongs to the family Platycnemididae.
This threadtail is found only in one place in the world: Melville Island in the Northern Territory of Australia. When an animal or plant is found only in one specific area, it is called endemic to that place. The Melville Island threadtail loves to live near streams on the island.
What Does It Look Like?
The Nososticta taracumbi is a small and thin damselfly. The males are quite striking with their black bodies and bright blue and white markings. The females, however, have a different look, with colors that are more like a yellowish-brown, often called ochre.
Both male and female Melville Island threadtails have wings that are a bit brownish-yellow. This gives them a unique look as they fly around their stream homes.
