Nothopuga is a group of fascinating creatures known as camel spiders. They are also called Solifugae or sun spiders. A scientist named Emilio Antonio Maury first described this group in 1976.
What are Nothopuga Camel Spiders?
Nothopuga camel spiders belong to a family called Ammotrechidae. Camel spiders are not true spiders, even though they look a bit like them. They are a different type of arachnid, which means they are related to spiders, scorpions, and mites.
These creatures are known for being very fast. They live in dry, desert-like areas. Nothopuga camel spiders are found in Argentina. They are usually active at night.
Types of Nothopuga Species
A "species" is a group of living things that can reproduce with each other. As of October 2022, scientists recognize three different types, or species, of Nothopuga camel spiders. All of them live in Argentina.
- Nothopuga cuyana — This species was described by Maury in 1976. It is found in Argentina.
- Nothopuga lobera — This species was also described by Maury in 1976. It lives in Argentina.
- Nothopuga telteca — This species was discovered more recently by a scientist named Iuri in 2021. It also lives in Argentina.
