Nottoway, also known as Nottoway Court House, is a small community located in Nottoway County, Virginia, United States. It serves as the county seat, which means it's the main town where the county government offices are located.

In 2010, about 84 people lived in Nottoway. By 2020, the population had changed to 63 people.

History of Nottoway

Nottoway was originally known by a different name: Lewistown. It became an important stop for trains in the mid-1800s.

Railroad Connections

The community was first a stop on the Southside Railroad. Over time, this railroad changed names and became part of bigger systems. In 1870, it was known as the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad. Later, it became a line for the Norfolk and Western Railway, and today it is part of the Norfolk Southern Railway. These railroads helped connect Nottoway to other towns and cities.

The Nottoway County High School serves all students in Nottoway County. This became possible after a period called desegregation. Desegregation meant that schools became open to all students, no matter their background, allowing everyone to learn together.
