Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College is a special kind of college located in New Town, North Dakota. It is a public college that serves the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation. This college helps tribal members get a good education and learn important skills. It also has smaller learning centers in Mandaree and White Shield.
History of Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College
The college first opened its doors on May 2, 1973. It was created to provide higher education for people on the Fort Berthold Reservation. The Three Affiliated Tribes believed that having a local college was important. It would help train tribal members and keep their unique cultures alive.
In 1994, Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College became a "land-grant college." This means it receives special support from the government. This support helps the college offer practical education, especially in farming and science.
How the College is Managed
Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College is run by the tribe itself. A group of seven people, called the board of directors, makes important decisions. When the college first started, a special committee helped get things going. In 1974, the board of directors took over. They began making plans to improve education and job training for everyone on the reservation.
What Students Learn at Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College
At first, Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College worked with other larger universities. These included the University of Mary, Minot State College, and the University of North Dakota. Students could take classes and earn credits through these partnerships.
