History of Nueva Ciudad Guerrero
How the City Started
The original town, known as Ciudad Guerrero, was founded a long time ago in 1750. Its first name was Villa del Señor San Ignacio de Loyola de Revilla. Later, its name was changed to honor Vicente Guerrero, who was the second President of Mexico.
For a short time in 1840, Ciudad Guerrero was even the capital of a small, independent area called the Republic of the Rio Grande.
Moving the City: Old and New Guerrero
The name "New Guerrero City" (Nueva Ciudad Guerrero) came about because the original town, often called Old Guerrero City (Antigua Guerrero), had to move. Old Guerrero was located near a different river, the Rio Salado, which flows into the Rio Grande.
In the 1950s, a large structure called the Falcon Dam was built. This dam created a big lake, and the waters of this new lake flooded Old Guerrero. Because of the flooding, the town had to be moved south to its current spot, right on the edge of the new Falcon Lake.
Even today, if the water level in Falcon Lake is very low, you might still be able to see parts of the old church from the original town. It is located at 26°46′40″N 99°20′21″W / 26.7777°N 99.3391°W.
