"Nunarput, utoqqarsuanngoravit" is the national anthem of Greenland. Its name means "You, Our Ancient Land." A national anthem is a special song that represents a country. Greenland is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
The words for this song were written by Henning Jakob Henrik Lund in 1912. It became Greenland's official anthem in 1916. The music for the song was created later by Jonathan Petersen in 1937.
Since 1979, another song called "Nuna asiilasooq" has also been an official song. This song means "The Land of Great Length." It is an important song for the Kalaallit people, who are the native people of Greenland.
How the Anthem Was Created
The song was written in 1912 by a Greenlandic priest named Henning Jakob Henrik Lund. At first, it used the tune of Sweden's national anthem. This song was one of the first national songs for Greenland. Some people think it was written to support politicians. These politicians wanted Greenland to have more self-rule.
In 1937, Jonathan Petersen composed a new tune for the anthem. He was an organist and piano teacher. In 1916, the song was translated into Danish. This translation was done by William Thalbitzer, who studied the Eskimo people.
For many years, this was the only Greenlandic song translated into Danish. Because of this, Denmark made it the official national anthem of Greenland. It was performed at the University of Copenhagen in 1921. This was for the 200th anniversary of Hans Egede arriving in Greenland. It was also played in 1937 for King Christian X of Denmark's 25-year jubilee. In 1985, the Danish translation was updated by Mads Lidegaard.
The Words of the Anthem
The fifth verse of the anthem is often sung after the first verse in shorter versions.
