Nyiyaparli (also called Nyiyabali or Njijabali) is an Indigenous Australian language. It is spoken by the Bailgu (Palyku) and Niabali people. These groups live in Western Australia. Sadly, very few people speak Nyiyaparli today, making it a "nearly extinct" language.

What is Nyiyaparli?

Nyiyaparli is part of a large group of languages called Pama–Nyungan. This is the biggest family of Aboriginal languages in Australia. Nyiyaparli also belongs to a smaller group within this family, known as Ngayarda languages.

Where is Nyiyaparli Spoken?

The Nyiyaparli language comes from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. This area is in the northwestern part of the state. It is a vast and ancient land.

Who Speaks Nyiyaparli?

The traditional owners of the Nyiyaparli language are the Bailgu and Niabali people. These are Aboriginal groups with a rich history and culture. They have lived on their lands for thousands of years. In 2005 and 2006, only about three people were recorded as speaking Nyiyaparli. This shows how few speakers are left.

Why is Nyiyaparli Important?

Every language is a special treasure. It carries the history, stories, and knowledge of a group of people. For Indigenous Australians, their languages are deeply connected to their land and identity. Losing a language means losing a unique way of seeing the world.

What Does "Nearly Extinct" Mean?

When a language is "nearly extinct," it means very few people still speak it. Often, these speakers are older. If no new generations learn the language, it can disappear forever. This is a sad loss for everyone.

Efforts to Keep Languages Alive

Many people are working hard to save languages like Nyiyaparli. They create programs to teach the language to younger people. They also record stories and songs in the language. This helps keep the culture and knowledge alive for the future.

Different Ways of Speaking Nyiyaparli

Like many languages, Nyiyaparli has different ways of being spoken. These are called dialects. Some dialects mentioned include Palyku, Nankilakuthu (also called the 'high' or padupadu dialect), and Martuyitha (the 'low' dialect). There is also a special way of speaking called a "formal language register" known as padupadu. This might be used for important ceremonies or discussions.
