Where the Bailgu Live
The Bailgu people traditionally lived in a large area. It covered about 6,300 square miles (16,317 square kilometers). This land was around the upper part of the Fortescue River. It also included places like Roy Hill.
Their land stretched north to the Chichester Range. It went east towards the Oakover River. The Niabali people were their neighbours to the west. The Yindjibarndi people were their neighbours at a place called Mandanaladji.
Bailgu History
Bailgu stories passed down through generations tell us something important. Before European people arrived, the Bailgu lived near the salt marshes of the Fortescue River. But another group, the Panyjima tribe, pushed them further east.
This story seems to be true. Other tribes in the west called the Bailgu Mangguldulkara. This name means "people of the marshes."
