Nyuwathayi facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Nyuwathayi (also spelled Njuwathai) were an Aboriginal Australian group of people. They lived in the northern part of Queensland, on the Cape York Peninsula. It is thought they might have spoken the Yinwum language, because of where they lived. However, there isn't much information about their language.

Where Did the Nyuwathayi Live?

The traditional lands of the Nyuwathayi people covered about 700 square miles (or 1,813 square kilometers). This area was mainly around the Middle Wenlock River. This river was an important part of their home country.

Connecting with Other Groups

In the late 1920s and 1930s, a researcher named Ursula McConnel studied the Aboriginal people of this area. During her studies, it seemed that the Nyuwathayi people often met and gathered with other groups. These groups included the Atjinuri and Yinwum peoples. They would often meet at the Moreton Telegraph Station, which was a known gathering place.
