O'Connor, Nebraska facts for kids
O'Connor is a small place in Greeley County, Nebraska, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's not officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
The Story of O'Connor
O'Connor was started in 1877 by a group of Irish Catholic families. They came together to form a new community. The place was named after Bishop James O'Connor. He was an important person in the Catholic Colonization Association, which helped people settle new lands.
For a while, O'Connor was even considered to be the main town, or county seat, for Greeley County. A county seat is like the capital city of a county, where the main government offices are located.
O'Connor also had its own post office for many years, from 1880 until 1904. This was where people could send and receive letters and packages.
Today, O'Connor is very small. As of 2014, it mostly consisted of a Catholic church and the house where the priest lived. There are also a few farmhouses nearby. The church has since been permanently closed. You can only go inside if you get special permission from the church leaders.
