Architect Mountain View Diner Company

O'Rourke's Diner is a famous diner located in Middletown, Connecticut. It is part of the historic area known as the Main Street Historic District. This diner is well-known for its unique look and tasty food.

The Diner's Story

The diner was started in 1941 by a man named John O'Rourke. A few years later, in 1946, John brought in a special diner car from the Mountain View Diners Company. This car gave the diner its cool and classic appearance.

New Owners and Challenges

In 1976, John's nephews, John and Brian, took over the diner. Later, in 1986, John sold his part of the diner to his cousin Brian.

On August 31, 2006, something sad happened. A fire broke out at O'Rourke's Diner. It caused a lot of damage because a hamburger steamer was left on overnight.

Community Helps Rebuild

The diner did not have fire insurance to help pay for repairs. So, people started raising money to fix it. They needed about $350,000.

By June 2007, they had collected $180,000. Work to rebuild the diner began. The local community and Wesleyan University helped a lot. On February 11, 2008, O'Rourke's Diner finally reopened its doors. It was a happy day for everyone!

Cool Achievements

O'Rourke's Diner has received some special honors over the years.

  • 2005: Connecticut Magazine named it the "Best Diner" in Connecticut.
  • 2008: The diner was featured on the Food Network TV show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The famous host, Guy Fieri, visited the diner!
