Oak Lodge is a special old building in Chatfield Hollow State Park in Killingworth, Connecticut. It sits by the beautiful Schreeder Pond. This lodge was built in 1937 by a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). It's a great example of their amazing work! Because of its history, Oak Lodge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
Building Oak Lodge
Schreeder Pond is a big part of Chatfield Hollow State Park. It's a lake that people made, not a natural one! The CCC workers built this 6.67-acre (about 2.7 hectares) pond in 1934. They also built simple bathhouses near the beach.
Oak Lodge is found near the south end of the pond, on its west side. It's a single-story building shaped like a rectangle. It has a chimney made of fieldstone. The roof is gabled and slopes outward at the bottom. The outside walls are covered with special wooden siding.
Inside the Lodge
The lodge has many windows with small glass panes. Each window is a casement style, meaning it opens outward like a door. There are several entrances, and each door is made of vertical wooden boards. These doors have cool, old-fashioned wrought iron hinges.
Inside, Oak Lodge is mostly one large room. There's a kitchen area at one end. You can see the wooden roof beams, which are part of the building's structure. There's also a large stone fireplace, which is an original feature.
The Civilian Conservation Corps
The lodge and other park features were built in the 1930s. This was part of a plan to create fun activities in Cockaponset State Forest. The pond was named after a state forest supervisor.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built Oak Lodge. The CCC was a program during the Great Depression. It gave jobs to young men. They worked on projects like building parks and roads. The CCC workers were very skilled. Their masons (stone workers), iron smiths, and woodworkers did excellent jobs. Oak Lodge shows off some of their best work.
