Oak Ridge, Pemiscot County, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Oak Ridge (once known as Douglas) is a small place in Pemiscot County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is an unincorporated community. This means it does not have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it is part of the larger county.

The Story of Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge was first planned and settled in 1895. Its name came from the area's natural features. There were many oak trees growing on a ridge.

Why the Name Changed

Later, people decided to change the name of the local post office to Douglas. This was done to avoid confusion. There was another town in Missouri also called Oak Ridge.

The Douglas post office opened in 1904. It served the community for many years. It stayed in operation until 1922.

Douglas Name Fades

Even though the post office was called Douglas for a while, the name Douglas eventually stopped being used for the community itself. Today, the area is known once again as Oak Ridge.
