Oakajee is a small place, or locality, located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It's about 25 kilometres (16 mi) north of the city of Geraldton.

Oakajee's Past: A Railway Stop

Oakajee has a bit of history tied to trains. From 1879 to 1957, it was a stop along the Northampton railway line. This railway was important for moving goods and people in the area.

The Big Idea: Oakajee Port Project

Oakajee is mostly known for a very large idea: the Oakajee Port proposal. A port is a place on the coast where ships can load and unload goods. This project was a plan to build a huge new port here.

Why a New Port?

The main reason for the proposed port was to help transport iron ore. Iron ore is a valuable rock used to make steel. Mines in the Mid West region needed a way to get their iron ore to ships, which would then carry it to other countries. A new port at Oakajee would have made this easier.

The Project's Journey

The idea for the Oakajee Port has been around for a long time. Many attempts were made to find the money needed to build it. However, the most recent efforts to get the project started stopped in 2014. This means the plan to build the big port at Oakajee is currently on hold.
