Oakfield is a place in Audubon County, Iowa, United States. It used to be a small community, but it's not officially a town anymore. You can find it about half a mile east of Brayton.
History of Oakfield
Early Days in Oakfield
The very first store in Oakfield was built in 1855. A person who moved here from Oakfield, New York, suggested the town's name. Just a few years later, in 1858, the first school opened its doors.
The Post Office and Decline
Oakfield also had its own post office, which opened in 1859. It helped people send and receive mail. However, the post office closed in 1875.
Later, when the railroad was built, it went through a nearby town called Brayton instead. This meant fewer people visited Oakfield, and the community started to shrink. By 1929, Oakfield had become very small. There was only one general store and a few homes left.
Oakfield Academy
The Oakfield Academy was a school that served the area for a long time. It has been kept safe and preserved, so we can still see it today.
