The Story of Oakman
How Oakman Got Its Name
Oakman has been around for a long time. It even had its own post office starting in 1908. A post office is where people send and receive mail. The community got its unique name from a local person who sold wood, called a lumber dealer. People nicknamed him the "oak man" because he worked with oak trees. That nickname then became the name of the community!
Oakman's Time as a Town
For a while, Oakman was an official town. The Georgia General Assembly, which is like the state's main law-making group, officially made Oakman a town in 1939. This meant Oakman had its own special rules and local government. But later, in 1995, the law that made Oakman an official town was removed. So, it went back to being an unincorporated community, managed by Gordon County.
