Discovering Oakville
Oakville was a community that existed for many years. It was a place where people lived and worked, just like any town or city. Over time, communities can change, and Oakville is an example of that.
Where Was Oakville Located?
Oakville was in Tennessee, specifically just east of the current Memphis International Airport. Its center was along US 78, which is also called Lamar Avenue. This spot was a little northeast of where Lamar Avenue meets Getwell Road. The community was also located along the SLSF railway. It was about five miles northeast of another community called Capleville.
A Look at Oakville's Past
In 1950, Oakville was home to about 2,000 people. This shows it was a small but active community. By 1958, the nearby city of Memphis was growing. Nonconnah Creek, which was just north of Oakville, almost became the southern edge of Memphis. This shows how close Oakville was to the expanding city.
How Oakville Became Part of Memphis
Over time, cities often grow and take in smaller areas around them. This process is called annexation. Oakville was eventually annexed by Memphis. This means it became an official part of the larger city of Memphis. This was part of Memphis's natural growth and expansion.
