A Look Back: Oakway's History
Oakway Center has been around for a long time, changing and growing with the city of Eugene. It first opened its doors way back in 1966.
How It Started
When it first opened, the shopping center was called Oakway Mall. It had a few big stores that people loved, like an Albertsons supermarket, Tiffany's Drugstore, and the Oakway Department Store.
Changes Over the Years
Over time, some stores moved or changed. The Oakway Department Store closed after just six years. In 1990, Albertsons moved to a new spot, and its old building became a TJ Maxx. Tiffany's Drugstore closed in 1998 and was replaced by a Borders Books & Music store, a popular place for books and music.
In 2005, TJ Maxx moved to a new location across the street. Its old space was then divided into smaller stores, including White House/Black Market. Later, in 2011, Borders Books & Music closed down. In 2013, Nordstrom Rack opened a new store in the spot where Borders used to be.
More recently, on May 21, 2020, it was announced that Pier 1 Imports would be closing all its stores, including the one at Oakway Center. This shows how shopping centers continue to evolve with new stores opening and others closing.
