The "5" Royales

How the Group Started

In 1951, the music group began as a gospel quintet. A quintet is a group of five people who perform together. They were first known as the Royal Sons. The group started in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. All the members were from that area. They were Obadiah Carter, Johnny Tanner, Eugene Tanner, Lowman Pauling, and Jimmy Moore.

The Royal Sons first sang in churches and on street corners. Later, they recorded their music with Apollo Records in New York City.

Becoming an R&B Group

The Royal Sons changed their style of music. They started out singing gospel songs, but then they began to sing secular songs. Secular songs are not religious. Their songs "You Know I Know" and "Courage to Love" became very popular. Because their music changed, their name also changed. The group became known as the "5" Royales. They became a well-known R&B group.

Awards and Recognition

Obadiah Carter received the North Carolina Heritage Award in 1992. This award honors people who have made important contributions to the arts and culture of North Carolina.

The "5" Royales group was honored in 2015. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is a special place that celebrates the most important and influential rock and roll artists.
