Obelisco (Guatemala City) facts for kids
The El Obelisco is a famous monument in Guatemala City, Guatemala. It is also known as the Monument to the Heroes of Independence. This tall stone structure was built in 1935 to remember when the countries of Central America became independent.
What is El Obelisco?
El Obelisco is a large stone pillar that stands about 18 meters (almost 60 feet) tall. It weighs 221 tons, which is like 221 small cars! Rafael Pérez De León designed this impressive monument. It was built during the time when Jorge Ubico was the president of Guatemala.
Where is it Located?
The monument stands in the middle of a very large traffic circle called Plaza del Obelisco (Obelisk Square). This square is a busy meeting point where several important roads come together. These roads include Avenida Reforma, Boulevard Los Próceres, Avenida Las Americas, and Boulevard Liberacion.
A Place of History
Before El Obelisco was built, a beautiful building called the Palace of La Reforma stood in the same spot. This palace had a classic style. However, it was destroyed by strong earthquakes that hit Guatemala in 1917 and 1918.
The Flame of Liberty
Later, in 1950, something special was added to the monument. During the presidency of Juan José Arévalo, a "flame of liberty" was placed near the column. This flame is a symbol of freedom and independence for the people of Guatemala.
