Ocuiltec, also called Tlahuica, is a language spoken by a small number of people in Central Mexico. It is very similar to the Matlatzinca language. Sadly, Ocuiltec is considered a "moribund" language. This means it is highly endangered and might disappear soon if nothing changes.

About the Ocuiltec Language

Ocuiltec is part of a larger group of languages called Oto-Pamean. These languages are native to Mexico. Ocuiltec has its own unique sounds and grammar. It helps us understand the rich history of languages in this region.

Where is Ocuiltec Spoken?

Most Ocuiltec speakers live in the Ocuilan area of Mexico. You can find them in villages like Cinco Caminos, El Capulín, and San Juan Atzingo. It's possible it was also spoken in a nearby area called Morelos.

Why is Ocuiltec Endangered?

Ocuiltec is in danger because very few people speak it. In 2000, only 26 people under the age of 20 spoke Ocuiltec. This means that not many young people are learning the language. When young people don't learn a language, it becomes harder for it to survive. This situation makes Ocuiltec a highly endangered language.
