Oddworld facts for kids
Oddworld is a super cool and award-winning video game series! It was created by a company called Oddworld Inhabitants, started by Lorne Lanning and Sherry McKenna. The name "Oddworld" is used for both the games and the amazing fictional universe where all the adventures happen.
The very first game in the series, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, came out in 1997. It was the start of a big story called the Oddworld Quintology. Between 1997 and 2005, four different games were released. Later, between 2010 and 2012, Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath were updated for PC and even got awesome HD versions for the PlayStation 3.
Many different game developers have worked on the Oddworld games. GT Interactive made Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus. Microsoft Gaming Studios developed Munch's Oddysee, and EA Games created Stranger's Wrath. More recently, Just Add Water (Developments LTD) has made the HD versions of Stranger's Wrath and Munch's Oddysee, plus a remake called Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty. All these games are set in a part of Oddworld called Mudos.

Games in the Oddworld Universe
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee was the very first game in the series. It's a 2D platform game where you move from screen to screen. It first came out in September 1997 for the PlayStation console and Microsoft Windows computers.
In the game, you play as Abe, a Mudokon who works at a meat factory called RuptureFarms. You'll explore many different screens, and some of them have dangerous creatures trying to stop Abe! A special feature in Abe's games is "GameSpeak." This lets Abe talk to his Mudokon friends and even take control of enemies called Sligs by chanting. Once Abe controls a Slig, he can make it shoot other enemies or open doors.
Your main goal is to save Abe's friends, the Mudokons. There are 99 Mudokons to rescue in the game. Some are hidden in secret areas, and the game gives you a sound clue when you find one. The game has two different endings. If you don't save at least 50 Mudokons, you'll get the sad ending instead of the good one. This game was re-released for PC in 2008 and for PS3 in 2009. A shorter Game Boy version called Oddworld: Adventures also came out in 1998.
Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus was the second game in the series, released in November 1998 for PlayStation and PC. The gameplay is similar to Abe's Oddysee, but with new levels and secret areas.
This game has even better GameSpeak! Abe can make many Mudokons follow him at once by saying "All o'ya!" He can also possess other creatures like Scrabs, Paramites, and Glukons. There are 300 Mudokons to save, and they can show different feelings like anger or sadness. You'll also meet new Oddworld creatures and different types of old ones, like flying Sligs. This game was also re-released for PC in 2008 and PS3 in 2009. A Game Boy Color version came out in 1999.
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee was the second game in the main Oddworld story. When it came out in 2001, it was only for Xbox. In this game, you can play as either Munch or Abe, and the story continues after Abe's Exoddus.
Munch is a new character, a Gabbit, and he's also playable! In this game, you have more things to rescue. Abe still saves his Mudokon friends, but Munch has to rescue Fuzzles and Gabbit eggs. The ending you get depends on your "Quarma," which is like your good or bad score in the game. If you have good Quarma, you get the good ending! This game was later released for PC in 2010 and got an HD version for PS3 in 2012.
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath was developed by EA Games and released in 2005. This game is set in the western part of Mudos and is all about a bounty hunter named Stranger. It's a different kind of game, played from a third-person view (seeing Stranger from behind) or a first-person view (seeing through Stranger's eyes). It was released in HD for PS3 in 2011 and later for PC, mobile, and macOS.
Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty
Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is a brand-new version, or "remake," of the very first game, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. It's a 2.5D side-scrolling platform game, meaning it looks 3D but you still move mostly left and right. Even the story scenes were made using the game's graphics!
This new game has cool features the original didn't, like "QuikSave" (saving your game quickly) and letting many Mudokons follow Abe at once. It was first planned for release in 2013 but was delayed because the developers switched to a new game engine called Unity. The game finally came out on PlayStation 4 in 2014. Later, it was released for PC, Mac, Linux, PS3, Wii U, and PS Vita. It even has leaderboards where you can see the best times for each level and how many Mudokons people saved!
Future Oddworld Games
The creators of Oddworld have big plans! They've said that if New 'n' Tasty sells enough copies, they'll have money to make an HD remake of Abe's Exoddus. In 2016, a new game called Oddworld: Soulstorm was confirmed as the next big game after New 'n' Tasty. It was planned for 2017, but as of 2018, the exact release date is still being decided.
Game Bundles
When Oddworld games became available only as digital downloads in 2010, they released a package for PC called the OddBoxx. This bundle includes all four main Oddworld games, so you can download them all at once! It's also available on the PS3. In 2013, they released the AbeBoxx for PS3, which has both of Abe's games.
Creatures of Oddworld
Oddworld is home to many interesting creatures, and some of them are enemies you'll meet in the games!
Sligs
Sligs are like the security guards of Oddworld. If they see Abe, they'll shout "Freeze!" and try to shoot him with their machine guns. Some Sligs don't even warn you, they just shoot! There are different kinds of Sligs, like flying Sligs and crawling Sligs. When Abe takes control of a Slig, he can make it shout "Look Out!" to make Mudokons duck, or say "Here boy" to a Slog to make it attack other Sligs.
Scrabs
Scrabs are dangerous creatures first seen in an area called Scrabania. They are very aggressive and will try to chop Abe up! They are related to Paramites.
Paramites
Paramites are another type of creature that also likes to chop up Abe. They were first seen in Paramonia.
Slogs
Slogs are dog-like creatures that live on Oddworld. Sligs train them to attack and eat any Mudokons they see.
Glukons
The Glukons are often the main bad guys in the games. They are the bosses who give orders to the Sligs. Mullock is a well-known Glukon from the first game.
