Odontonema strictum, also known as the Firespike plant, is a beautiful flowering plant that belongs to the Acanthaceae family. It's originally from South America, which means it's endemic there – you'll only find it growing naturally in that region! This plant can grow quite tall, reaching up to two meters (about 6.5 feet) when planted in the ground. If you grow it in a pot, it will usually stay about half that size.
The Firespike plant produces lovely, waxy flowers that grow on long spikes, sometimes up to twelve inches (about 30 cm) long! In its natural home, these bright flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies, especially when they bloom in the autumn.

Where to Plant Your Firespike
To help your Odontonema strictum grow its best and produce lots of flowers, it needs plenty of bright light. It's best to avoid very harsh afternoon sun, which can be too strong. The plant can handle some shade for about half the day, but it really prefers more light to truly thrive.
Keeping Pests Away
Good news for gardeners! The Firespike plant is not usually bothered by many common garden pests. This means it's a fairly easy plant to take care of, as you won't have to spend too much time worrying about bugs.
How Firespike Plants Grow
The Firespike plant naturally grows with many branches, starting straight from the ground. If it doesn't get enough sunlight, its branches might become long and thin. If your plant gets too tall and starts to fall open, you can prune it back. This helps the plant stay strong and bushy. It's also a moderately fast-growing plant, so you'll see it get bigger fairly quickly.
Watering Your Firespike
This plant likes a moderate amount of water. This means you should water it regularly, but make sure the soil isn't constantly soggy. Let the top layer of soil dry out a bit between waterings.
Starting New Firespike Plants
You can easily grow new Firespike plants from cuttings. Just take a semi-soft cutting from a healthy plant, and it will usually root quite well. To help your new plant grow into a compact, bushy shape, you can "tip" it a few times. This means pinching off the very tips of the growing stems. Do this before you let the plant fully mature.
