Oh No's Musical Journey
Early Life and Family Music
Michael Woodrow Jackson grew up in a family full of music! His older brother is the well-known hip-hop artist Madlib. His dad, Otis Jackson, was a singer, and his uncle, Jon Faddis, was a jazz trumpeter. It's clear that music runs in their family!
Oh No started his own music journey performing with his group called Kali Wild. He even appeared on an album by his brother's group, Lootpack, called Soundpieces: Da Antidote.
Starting His Career
Oh No signed with Stones Throw Records, a record label based in Los Angeles. He released his first album, The Disrupt, in 2004. Around this time, he also started working with other artists. He produced music for people like Wildchild, MED, and many others. He has also produced tracks for famous groups like Juggaknots, De La Soul, and Murs.
Unique Sound and Inspiration
In 2006, Oh No released Exodus Into Unheard Rhythms. For this album, he used samples only from the music of Galt MacDermot, a famous composer. Critics really liked the album, and it helped Oh No become known as a top underground hip-hop producer.
In 2007, he released Dr. No's Oxperiment. This album was special because it was made entirely from samples of Turkish, Lebanese, Greek, and Italian music. He continued this unique style in 2009 with Dr. No's Ethiopium, which used only samples from Ethiopian music.
Music for Video Games
Oh No loves video games! He even created a beat using only video game sounds for a song called "The Ride" on his album The Disrupt. In 2009, he remixed several songs for the soundtrack of the fighting game BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger.
Later, in 2013, Oh No helped create the original music for the popular video game Grand Theft Auto V. He worked on this project with The Alchemist, Tangerine Dream, and Woody Jackson.
