The Ohio State Buckeyes men's volleyball team is one of the many sports teams at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. This team plays volleyball and is known for being really good! They are coached by Kevin Burch. The Buckeyes were one of the first teams to join the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) way back in 1968. They have won many championships, including 27 MIVA regular season titles, 17 MIVA tournament titles, and three big NCAA men's volleyball tournament championships! They play their home games at the Covelli Center on their campus.
Where the Buckeyes Play: The Covelli Center
The Ohio State Buckeyes play their home volleyball games at the Covelli Center. They started playing there in 2020. Before that, they played for over 50 years at a place called St. John Arena.
Their very first game at the Covelli Center was on January 4, 2020. They played against North Greenville University and won the game 3–0. A lot of fans, 1,169 people, came to watch that exciting first match!
The Covelli Center will also host the big NCAA men's volleyball tournament in 2021. Ohio State has hosted this tournament before in their old arena, in years like 1978, 1983, 1997, 2007, and 2017.
Amazing Seasons and Big Wins
The Ohio State Buckeyes men's volleyball team has had many memorable seasons. Here are some of their most exciting moments and big wins:
- 1969: In only their second year, the Buckeyes had a perfect season! They won all 24 of their games (24–0). This amazing record helped them win their very first conference title.
- 1975: Ohio State played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time. They had a great record of 19 wins and only 2 losses. They played against UCLA and then beat Yale to finish in third place.
- 1977: The Buckeyes made it all the way to the NCAA Tournament Finals! They defeated Pepperdine in a tough match. Even though they lost to USC in the final, they were the National Runner-up, which is a huge achievement!
- 2011: After trying for many years, the Buckeyes finally won their first National Title! They defeated strong teams like Penn State and UC Santa Barbara to become champions.
- 2016: The Buckeyes won their second National Title! They played incredibly well, beating George Mason, UCLA, and BYU. A player named Miles Johnson was named the Most Outstanding Player for the tournament because of his excellent performance.
- 2017: For the second year in a row, and their third time overall, the Buckeyes won the National Championship! This win was extra special because they did it in front of their home crowd. They defeated Hawaii and BYU in the tournament. Nicolas Szerszen was named Most Outstanding Player for his fantastic play.
