What Makes Ojos Azules Unique?
How the Ojos Azules Breed Started
This rare cat breed was first found in New Mexico in 1984. People noticed some wild cats with unusually dark blue eyes. The very first cat discovered was a tortoiseshell cat named Cornflower.
When Cornflower had kittens, even when she mated with cats that didn't have blue eyes, all her kittens had those same beautiful blue eyes. This showed that the blue eye trait was very strong, or "dominant." Because of this, the Ojos Azules breed was created and named after its most striking feature.
The Secret Behind Their Blue Eyes
Ojos Azules cats are known for their incredibly deep blue eyes. This is different from the blue eyes you might see in other cats, like Siamese (cat) cats or cats with white fur. In those cats, the blue eyes are often linked to their fur color or can sometimes cause other issues like deafness.
But for Ojos Azules, their special gene for blue eyes isn't connected to their fur color. This means you can find Ojos Azules cats with dark fur and bright blue eyes, which is very unusual! Their eye color is even deeper than what you usually see in a Siamese cat, and it doesn't cause them to squint or have crossed eyes.
One small clue that a cat might carry the Ojos Azules gene is a slightly flattened tail-tip.
Breeding Challenges
Scientists have studied the Ojos Azules gene. They found that if a kitten gets two copies of this special gene (one from each parent), it can cause serious problems. These kittens might be born with white fur, a small curled tail, skull problems, or might not survive.
However, if a kitten gets only one copy of the gene (from just one parent), it will have the beautiful blue eyes without these health issues. This means breeders must be very careful. They need to breed an Ojos Azules cat with blue eyes to a cat that does not have blue eyes. This way, about half of the kittens will have the special blue eyes, and they will be healthy.
How Rare Are They?
The Ojos Azules is a very rare cat breed. The first one was found in 1984, but by 1992, only about ten of these cats were known!
The International Cat Association (TICA) officially recognized the breed in 1991. However, because of the genetic challenges, breeding was temporarily stopped to ensure the health of these unique cats. Only cats with the deep blue eye gene are called Ojos Azules.
What Do Ojos Azules Cats Look Like?
Physical Features
Ojos Azules cats are usually medium-sized. Their most famous feature is their large, round, bluish eyes.
They have a head that looks a bit like a triangle, with a slightly rounded forehead and a clear muzzle. Their neck is arched, and their tail is a good length for their body.
Their fur is short, fine, soft, and shiny. They can come in almost any color! It's common for them to have white markings on their paws, muzzle, and the tip of their tail. However, large white patches on their belly or chest are not typical for the breed.
It's important to know that solid white Ojos Azules cats with blue eyes are not deaf, unlike many other white cats with blue eyes. This is another special thing about the Ojos Azules gene! Besides Ojos Azules, only white cats or "colorpoint" cats (like Siamese) can have blue eyes.
Personality Traits
Because they are so rare, not a lot is known about the exact personality of every Ojos Azules cat. However, some owners say these cats are:
- Active and playful
- Friendly and loving
- Easy to take care of and don't need much brushing
