Location of Okeana, Ohio

Okeana is a small community in Butler County, Ohio, United States. It's not a city with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's part of a larger township and relies on the county for many services. Okeana is located in central Morgan Township.

Discovering Okeana's Location

Okeana is found along Dry Fork Creek, which flows into the Great Miami River. You can find it on State Route 126. It's about three miles northwest of a place called Shandon. Okeana is also close to other small communities: about a mile north of Alert, a mile east of Macedonia, and ten miles southwest of the larger city of Hamilton. Most of the homes in Okeana are part of the Ross Local School District, but some areas are in the Southwest Local School District.

The Story Behind Okeana's Name

Okeana was first known as Tariff when a post office opened there in 1828. However, the name was changed on May 27, 1858, to Okeana. This new name was chosen in honor of the daughter of a Native American chief named Kiatta. There's even a stream in Morgan Township named after Chief Kiatta! The community of Okeana itself was officially established in 1858. A person named Rev. Benjamin Lloyd helped to plan and lay out the town.

Symbols: The Flag of Okeana

The flag of Okeana, Ohio, features a blue heron bird. This bird is important because it comes from the original flag of the Miami Native American Tribe. The Miami Tribe, who once lived in Ohio and Indiana, also had images of a turtle and a blue heron on their flag. The gold circle around the word "Okeana" on the flag represents the state of Ohio. The gold color also stands for the colors of the Ross school district.
