A Horse with a Record
Billy was born in England in 1760. He lived in a place called Woolston, Cheshire. He was a very special horse because he lived for 62 years. This makes him the oldest horse ever recorded!
What Did Old Billy Do?
Billy worked as a barge horse. This means he helped pull big barges along canals. He pulled these boats up and down the waterways. It was hard work, but Billy did it for many years.
What Old Billy Looked Like
People said Old Billy looked like a big, strong horse. He was a mix of a cob and a Shire horse. He had brown fur and a white stripe on his face.
Old Billy's Final Years
Billy passed away on November 27, 1822. He was living at the estate of William Earle in Everton, Liverpool. Mr. Earle was an important person at the Mersey and Irwell Navigation Company.
Remembering Old Billy
Today, you can still see parts of Old Billy. His skull is kept at the Manchester Museum. There's also a special picture, called a lithograph, of Old Billy with a man named Squire Henry Harrison.
