About the Story
This movie follows Professor Benjamin Tibbetts, played by Will Hay. He works for an organization called the Teaching & Welfare Institution for the Reformation of Pagans, or T.W.I.R.P. for short. His job is to bring education to people living in parts of Africa that were once under British control.
Professor Tibbetts is the uncle of a character known as "Bones" from other stories. Because of this, people call the Professor "Old Bones."
Professor Tibbetts' Arrival
When Professor Tibbetts first arrives, he's still trying to learn the local language by listening to recordings. He gets tricked by Prince M'Bapi, who is the half-brother of Bosambo, the chief of the Ochori tribe. M'Bapi tricks the Professor into bringing a machine used to make gin into the country.
The same boat that brings Professor Tibbetts also takes Commissioner Sanders away on vacation. Captain Hamilton then takes over Sanders' duties.
Life at Kombooli High
Later, Tibbetts goes to Kombooli High, a school where his students wear special collars like those from a famous English school, along with their traditional clothes. Professor Tibbetts wears a special academic hat, but because it's so hot, he wears safari shorts under his teaching robe.
Taking Charge
Captain Hamilton gets sick with malaria, which is a serious illness spread by mosquitoes. Because of this, Professor Tibbetts has to take over his duties. One of these important jobs is collecting taxes from the local people.
He travels up the river in a canoe and finds a large boat called the Zaire. This boat is run by two funny characters, Harbottle (Moore Marriott) and Albert (Graham Moffatt).
Facing Trouble
Prince M'Bapi starts a rebellion against Chief Bosambo. Professor Tibbetts, Harbottle, and Albert work together. They manage to rescue a baby from a dangerous situation during the conflict.
