Conocotocko of Chota, also known as Old Hop, was a respected Cherokee elder. He served as the First Beloved Man of the Cherokee people from 1753 until he passed away in 1760. The First Beloved Man was a very important leader, guiding the Cherokee nation.
Who Was Old Hop?
Conocotocko was a wise leader from the Cherokee town of Chota. People of European descent often called him Old Hop. He was also the uncle of another famous Cherokee leader, Attakullakulla, who was known as Little Carpenter.
Old Hop's Leadership Style
Historian Fred Gearing described Old Hop's way of leading. He was very good at helping Cherokees agree when they had different ideas. Old Hop usually avoided making decisions by himself.
He was known for being calm and patient. He remained cool-headed even with those who were more impulsive. Old Hop was seen as a perfect example of what a Cherokee leader should be. He was always very careful and thoughtful in his actions.
