The Story of the Old Rectory

The Old Rectory was designed by Edmund Blacket in 1849. It was built as a home for the rector of St. Paul's Anglican Church. This church, built in 1848, was also designed by Blacket.

The rectory was not just a home. It was also partly used as a school. This helped the rector earn extra money.

In the 1970s, new owners bought the property. They started to fix up the building and its gardens. The gardens had become very wild and overgrown.

In 1982, the owners received a grant of $25,000. This money came from the Heritage Conservation fund. It helped them restore the old building.

As part of the grant, the owners agreed to protect the building. The Heritage Council suggested a Permanent Conservation Order. This order helps make sure the building is protected for a long time.

The order became official on 26 October 1984. Later, on 2 April 1999, it was moved to the State Heritage Register.
