Old Soar Manor is a very old stone house in Kent, England. It is near a village called Plaxtol. This special house was built a long, long time ago in the 1200s!
Today, Old Soar Manor is looked after by two important groups: English Heritage and the National Trust. These groups help protect old buildings and places so everyone can learn about history. Old Soar Manor is so important that it is "listed Grade I." This means it is one of the most special historic buildings in England.
What is Old Soar Manor?
Old Soar Manor is a type of large country house called a manor house. It was built in 1290, which is over 700 years ago! Back then, it belonged to a family named Culpepper.
What Can You See Today?
The main part of the original house was a big room called the "great hall." Imagine a huge living room where everyone ate and spent time! Sadly, this great hall was taken down in 1780. A red-brick farmhouse was built in its place. This farmhouse is also old and special, listed as Grade II.
Even though the great hall is gone, you can still visit and see some amazing parts of the original 13th-century manor. These include:
- The solar: This was a private room, often used by the lord or lady of the manor. Think of it as a cozy, private sitting room or bedroom.
- The latrine: This was the toilet area of the old house. It shows how people lived hundreds of years ago!
- The chapel: This was a small, private church inside the manor where the family could pray.
It's really cool to see these parts of history still standing today!
