History of the Church
Building the First Church
Around 1857, people started collecting money. They wanted to build a church and a home for their minister. They built a church called Christ Church. It was on the corner of George and Macauley Streets.
Several church services were held there. But a week after it was officially opened in 1861, a big storm destroyed it! After that, church services were held in the Masonic Hall.
St Paul's Church is Built
The first stone for the new St Paul's Church was placed in 1866. Architects Smith & Watson from Melbourne designed it. John Taylor built the church in the same year. The local rector, Rev. Samuel Harper, opened it in November 1866.
However, it wasn't officially blessed by the Bishop of Goulburn until May 1873. The church was used for many years. It served the community until 1977.
A New Church and Restoration
In 1977, a new Anglican church was built. It was located where the old rectory (minister's house) used to be. After the new church opened, Old St Paul's was no longer used as a church.
In the early 1990s, the old church needed a lot of work. It was falling apart and had been damaged by vandals. The Heritage Council of New South Wales helped with this big restoration project.
The old slate roof was replaced. Damaged brickwork was fixed. Doors and beautiful stained glass windows were repaired or replaced. The inside of the church also got a major makeover.
Old St Paul's Today
Today, the Edward River Council looks after Old St Paul's. It is now called the Multi-Arts Centre. It's a busy place for art shows, workshops, and community gatherings. It's a great example of how old buildings can find new life!
