This shop is special because it's one of the few stone blacksmith shops left in Vermont. People used it for over 100 years to shape metal. What Does the Old Stone Blacksmith Shop Look Like?
The Old Stone Blacksmith Shop is in a quiet, country part of Cornwall. It sits on the west side of Vermont Route 30. The building has one floor and is made from rough, uneven limestone rocks. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a gabled roof.
The corners of the building use more carefully cut stones. The shop is built into a hill. This means the front of the building is fully visible. But the back wall is almost completely hidden underground.
The front of the shop has a rectangular window in the middle. To the right of the window, there is a large two-part door. These doors have cool old hinges made of wrought iron. The walls under the roof's peaks have windows that slide up and down. The part of the back wall that sticks out has narrow windows that open like a door.

People have traditionally thought the shop was built in 1791. That's the year Thomas Pritchard bought the land. The way the building is made with stone looks like other buildings from that time. Some similar stone buildings were built as late as 1845.
We know that Thomas Pritchard sold a blacksmith shop in 1805. But it's not clear if it was this exact building. Even if the exact building date isn't certain, it's still very old. It is the oldest building of its kind in Cornwall. It shows us how people worked and lived a long time ago.
