The Old Stone House is a very old and special building in Winooski, Vermont. It was built a long, long time ago, around 1790. This makes it the oldest building still standing in the city! Over the years, it has been many different things. It was once a place for travelers to stay, then homes for families, and now it's used for offices. Because it's so important to history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
Discovering the Old Stone House
The Old Stone House is located in central Winooski. You can find it just east of Rotary Park, on East Allen Street. It's a two-and-a-half-story building. It is made from rough, natural stone. The roof slopes down on two sides, which is called a gable roof.
The front of the house has five sections. Each section has windows. The main door is in the middle. It has tall, narrow windows on each side. On the second floor, right above the main door, there's another doorway. This doorway has a metal railing in front of it. A wooden part was added to the back of the house. This addition is almost as old as the main stone part.
A Look at Its Long History
People believe the Old Stone House was built around 1790. A person named Roswell Butler supposedly built it. It is the only building left in Winooski from right after the American Revolutionary War. This war ended in 1783.
For many years, the house was a public place. It was sometimes a tavern, which is like an inn. It was also a hotel for a while. This continued until 1826. The wooden addition at the back was built in 1793. After 1826, the building changed. It became a house with several apartments. People lived there until the 1960s. Today, the Old Stone House is used for professional offices.
