The Old Town Main Post Office is a cool old building in Old Town, Maine. You can find it at 141 Center Street. This building was designed in a style called Classical Revival. It looks a bit like ancient Greek or Roman buildings.
The design for the post office was finished in 1912. The actual building was completed in 1914. It was designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect, a special government office. This office was led by Oscar Wenderoth at the time. In 1986, the post office was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical building worth protecting.
About the Old Town Post Office
The Old Town Main Post Office is located on the north side of Center Street. It's right where Center Street meets Shirley Street, not far from Main Street.
What the Building Looks Like
This post office is a two-story building. It's made from carefully cut stone. The roof is flat. The front of the building looks very grand, like a classical temple.
The front has five main sections. These sections are separated by columns that are part of the wall. The sections on the ends have tall, narrow windows. These windows are set back a bit and have a special stone at the top called a keystone. They also have a small ledge at the bottom.
The windows on the second floor are more square-shaped. They also have a small ledge. Above these windows, there's a decorative band with a pattern. Above that, there's a fancy border with small, diamond-shaped windows. A projecting ledge, called a cornice, sits at the very top.
The main entrance is set back into the building. It has a very detailed and carved frame around it.
Inside the Post Office
When you go inside, the main lobby has a floor made of terrazzo. This is a special type of flooring that looks like marble. The lower part of the walls has marble panels, called wainscoting. There's also nice wooden trim around the room. Above the service counter and mailboxes, there are small windows called transoms. These let in extra light.
The building has been carefully fixed up over the years.
