Old Town in the Green Groves is a book written by Cynthia Rylant. It's based on notes and general knowledge about the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the author of the famous Little House books. This book is not officially part of the original Little House series. However, it tells the story of a time period that happened between the end of On the Banks Of Plum Creek and the beginning of By The Shores Of Silver Lake.
In the original Little House books, some events were changed or shortened. This was done to make the stories flow better. Old Town in the Green Groves helps fill in the details of a time that was skipped over in Laura's own books.

The Ingalls Family's Journey
This book covers an important time in the Ingalls family's life. It includes the birth of Laura's younger brother, Charles Ingalls Jr.. He was born on November 1, 1875, in Minnesota.
Leaving Walnut Grove
The Ingalls family had a tough time in Walnut Grove. They faced several years of bad crops. This led to many debts. Because of these difficulties, Pa decided to sell their farm.
The family then planned to move to Burr Oak, Iowa. Pa had a job offer there. He was going to help run a hotel in the town.
A Sad Stop in South Troy
On their way to Iowa, the family stopped in South Troy, Minnesota. They stayed there for some time with relatives. Sadly, during this period, Charles Jr. passed away. He was only 9 months old when he died on August 27, 1876.
New Life in Burr Oak
After this sad event, the family continued their journey to Burr Oak. They started their new jobs at the hotel. While living in Burr Oak, another baby was born into the family. Laura's youngest sister, Grace Ingalls, was born there on May 23, 1877.
Moving West Again
Eventually, the Ingalls family managed to get back on their feet. They recovered from their financial struggles. Once they were stable, they decided to move west again. Their journey took them back to Minnesota. From there, they traveled to the Dakota Territory. This is where much of the story in By the Shores of Silver Lake takes place.
