History of South Troy

South Troy has a simple but interesting history, especially regarding its name.

Early Days and Post Office

A post office was open in South Troy for many years. It operated from 1858 until 1903. This means people living there could send and receive mail right in their community.

How South Troy Got Its Name

The area near South Troy was originally called Troy in the 1850s. This included the community that is now known as Zumbro Falls. The name South Troy was given to the area south of this original Troy, stretching towards the county line.

However, there was a problem with the name Troy. Another community named Troy already existed in southeast Minnesota, in Winona County. To avoid confusion, the name of the original Troy was changed to Zumbro Falls after 1860. The name South Troy stuck for the area to its south.

Famous Visitors

South Troy is known for a short but important visit from a very famous American author.

During their stay in South Troy, a sad event occurred for the Ingalls family. Laura's younger brother, Charles Frederic 'Freddy' Ingalls, passed away. He was their fourth child and only son. Freddy was born on November 1, 1875, in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. He died in South Troy on August 27, 1876, when he was just 10 months old.
