The Old U.S. Post Office and Courthouse is a really old and important building in Miami, Florida. It's located at 100-118 Northeast 1st Avenue. This building was built a long time ago, between 1912 and 1914. It was designed by architects named Kiehnel and Elliott and Oscar Wenderoth. Because it's so special, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on January 4, 1989. This means it's officially recognized as a historic place worth protecting.

About This Historic Building

Early Days and Design

This grand building served as both a post office and a courthouse for many years. It was a busy place where people sent mail and important legal decisions were made. The Miami-Dade County Tax Records show that the building was completed in 1917.

The Weather Bureau's Role

In August 1914, the Miami Weather Bureau Office moved into the third floor of this old federal building. Weather tools were placed on the roof to help measure the weather. Richard Gray, who lived from 1874 to 1960, was in charge of the office.

This office was very important for sharing weather warnings. It sent out alerts from Washington D.C. for big storms like the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 and the Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928. The Miami Weather Bureau Office stayed on the third floor from 1914 to 1929. However, the weather tools were moved to the Seybold Building in 1927.

A Bank's New Home

In 1933, Dr. William Homer Walker started the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Miami. This was the very first federal savings and loan company ever created in the United States.

His bank grew very quickly and needed more space. So, in May 1937, Dr. Walker bought the old Miami Post Office and Federal Court Building. This building became the new home for his savings and loan company. In 1973, the bank moved again to a much taller building. That building is now known as the SunTrust International Center in downtown Miami.
